Dr. Shriram Raghavan

Short Bio

He is presently a business advisor to technology parks – including Golden Jubilee Biotech Park for Women, Chennai; KIIT-Technology Business Incubator; Bhubaneshwar, and a BIRAC (Govt of India) nominee on the Board of Centre for Agri Innovation (aIDEA-NAARM), Hyderabad. He is closely associated with Central & State governments for nurturing entrepreneurs to success. Moreover, he also works with other Governments in Asia (including Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia) on similar ideation projects and bringing them to fruition. He is also an Executive Council member for ABLE – Association of Biotech Led Enterprises, an association of more than 600 biotech companies in India.

He is presently the Vice President at Jananom Technologies (formerly the Indian arm of the Swiss MNC Evolva Biotech ) with about 18 years of corporate research experience spanning diverse life science segments including quantum biology, systems biology, synthetic biology, genetic chemistry and sustainable biology. He received the award “Company of the year in 2011” in London on behalf of his team for life sciences. The Indian investor into Evolva India made a hugely successful exit. Prior to Evolva, he had been part of FIVE start-ups with TWO successes (“ReaMetrix”, invested by Bala Manian in San Jose, from 2003 to 2005 & “Jubilant Biosys”, invested by Bhartia group in Bangalore from 2001 to 2003) and THREE failures (“Molecules 2 Market Online”, invested by DSQ in Chennai, “Proteome Networks” invested by Siri Technologies in Bangalore, “Low Density Array Technologies” invested by Eppendorf in Belgium).

He also works closely with several industry association bodies in drafting framework policies to help government and companies for boosting the economy via bio- entrepreneurship and nurturing start-ups. He was part of the CII team which outlined the innovative “Senophoric cluster” for Tamil Nadu (which eventually attracted a FDI close to 1 Billion USD investment in 5 years with 5 key “anchor” clients – in F&F sector).

He helps in identifying and nurturing young talents via several forums such as TED, “The Bait”, “Changemakers Forum”, talent crowd sourcing, Mission Mars 2033, etc some of which have him as a judge on their panels of leading experts. He presently serves on the Board of Studies in Pondicherry Central University, Bennett University, KIIT University, Jaypee University and have introduced a new paper in the final semester on “Industrial Confluence in Life sciences” for encouraging bio entrepreneurship.

He has a Masters in Biochemical Engineering with specialisation in industrial enzymes (from HP University Shimla), M.Phil. and Ph.D. in computational systems biology (from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore), an MBA in international business (from University of Madras) with focus on transfer pricing for biotechnology intangibles, and a certified “Key Executive Professional” from Harvard Business school in Boston, USA. He focussed on tax evasion of large multinationals using transfer pricing as a tool and was part of creating crucial guidelines for OECD during this study at Harvard Business School, Boston. He also has about 10 patents to his credit.
